RotorBlog.com: Will Greed Kill the One Child Per Laptop Program?

I can agree with you that XO laptops do not solve the problem of world hunger or poor life expectancy, however, you do not offer an alternative. Do you think the money spent should be used on something else? It seems like one of the best things about the XO laptop is that it is not a monetary asset that can be taken by a corrupt, bureaucratic government nor a perishable asset, such as food, that will need to be replenished.

While the laptops will not single-handedly move a third world country out of poverty, it is a step. Education is one of the greatest equalizers of disparity in wealth distribution and any small step helps.

Also, giving people a voice is important. For many people living in prosperous countries, someone in a third world country is out of sight and out of mind. Someone giving an account of day to day life in a war-torn country gives others a connection to the concerns of the people there.

It's certainly not perfect but it's a step.
